Petition: Implementation of a fragrance-free policy in health care establishments

WHEREAS fragrances, scents and perfumes are complex mixtures of chemicals, often including petroleum-based volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can impact indoor air quality and human health;

WHEREAS multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is recognized as a disability requiring accommodation, including a scent-free policy;

WHEREAS studies indicate that approximately one-third of the population reports adverse symptoms when exposed to fragranced products, including respiratory and skin issues;

WHEREAS infants and young children exposed to fragrances can suffer severe symptoms, such as respiratory distress, rashes and gastrointestinal symptoms;

WHEREAS adults commonly experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, respiratory irritation and skin reactions upon exposure to fragranced products;

WHEREAS individuals with conditions like asthma, respiratory diseases, MCS, migraines and dermatitis may experience worsened symptoms from fragrance exposure;

WHEREAS health care facilities are dedicated to promoting health and eliminate harmful environmental exposures;

WHEREAS fragrance-free policies have been successfully implemented in various health care facilities worldwide, including within Canada, to protect patients, staff and visitors;

WHEREAS education and awareness are essential for effectively implementing fragrance-free policies in health care settings;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to establish a fragrance-free policy in all health care facilities across Québec and to ensure the use of the least-toxic products, to create a safer environment for all.
